| Patrick Kavanagh was born in County Monaghan in
1905. He was destined to become one of Ireland's greatest literature figures.
Patrick was self educated and grew up on his family farm in County Monaghan. Patrick
always felt imprisoned by his farmland and the poem Stoney Gray Soil of Monaghan
was one of his most famous poems in which he describes the Stoney Gray Soil of
Monaghan sucking all the creative life out of him.
Patrick Kavanagh moved
to Dublin where he spent the rest of his life. He was a character in every sense
of the word. He was often seen frequenting Public Houses around Dublin. Kavanagh
spent a lot of time around Baggot Street Bridge on the banks of the canal. In
memory of Patrick, a statue has been placed on one of the benches beside the canal
in memory of his talents. Many presume that this area in Dublin, a little piece
of greenery gave him solitude. Patrick Kavanagh died of lung cancer in 1967.
For some time before his death he had survived with only one lung.
