| The book of Kells is housed in the Trinity Library,
and each day a different page is displayed. This impressive bible was composed
by monks and is the finest example of hand written copies of the bible still in
existence today.
The Book is a illuminated gospel book which is a magnum
opus of the Hiberno-Saxon style. It is most likely that the book dates back to
the 8th Century, and after a Viking Raid the book was taken from an Irish Monastery
on the Scottish Island of Iona. After this raid the book was taken to the Monastery
of Kells in Co. Meath where experts think the book was completed.. The Hiberno-Saxon
style is the result a combined style shared between the Hibernian and the Saxons.
In 635 Irish Monks sailed to England taking with them a number of ancient Celtic
scrolls which contained advanced decoration in the form of 'trumpet' and a double
curve, or shield, motif known as a pelta. These features can also be seen in metalwork
and Irish manuscripts. The Saxon style of art was similar, but yet differed.
Saxon calligraphy is characterized by elaborate zoomorphic interlace. The Hiberno-Saxon
Style is a combination of both styles and traditions.
