| The Green Party which focuses their policies on
the environment. The precursor to the Present Day Green Party was formed in Dublin
during December 1981. It was during March of 1992 that the party established their
policies.
Later that year seven candidates were run in the General Election
of Ireland, winning 1% of the vote. It wasn't until 1985 that the Green Party
tasted any success, when a member was elected in Killarney during local elections
in 1985. The Party took its name in 1989 to make the policies around which
they base themselves clearer to the general public. In 1991 The Green achieved
it's first notable success with 13 councilors elected to office in Local Elections
in Dublin. The Party entered into a coalition with the Labour Party, among other
minor party, to gain a overall majority on the Dublin City Council. In
1994 two European candidates were elected as Members of the European Parliament.
While the party hasn't enjoyed much success since then, the popularity of the
party is in a state of increase. They are no longer seen as a party with untenable
ideals, but a serious party which may provide and alternative view on how to do
things. While The Green Party will probably never win an overall majority
in Dail Eireann (something that rarely happens), there is a possibility of The
Green Party becoming part of a coalition Government.
