| Situated several miles South of Dublin City Center,
along the coastline of Dublin Bay, Dun Laoghaire is one of Ireland's busiest sea
ports with many fishing, pleasure and ferry crafts docked there.
This port
is one of the most popular ports for people traveling by ferry to Great Britain
and it is possible to bring your car on the ferry. Crossings can take between
1 to 3 hours depending on which ferry you are on. It is one of Ireland's most
important gateways to Europe. The name is derived from King Laoghaire of
Tara, who had held a fort in the location during the 5th Century. During the 18th
Century Dun Laoghaire began to prosper and in 1816 work began on the construction
of the pier. Development of houses also continued during this time, and if you
glance around the architecture you will notice it is Georgian. The ferry
terminal referenced in the previous paragraph was built in 1969.
